Jim Meyering e37768067a Remove test for the VERSION_CONTROL and/or 
SIMPLE_BACKUP_SUFFIX envvars.  Source ../envvar-check instead.

Jim Meyering 91b5e686d5 Adapt to reflect this change in behavior. 
Make sure the VERSION_CONTROL envvar is not set.
Run diff if comparison fails.

Jim Meyering 806520fdc0 Update to reflect this change by reversing 
the order of arguments so the symlink is the source, not the
destination (otherwise, the mv command would now succeed).
