8e9121a740 (programs, check-x-vs-1): Use ../src/tr -s ' ' '\n' in place 
of `fmt -1'.  Using the just-built tr is a little cleaner.
Christian Krackowizer reported that HPUX 10.20 doesn't have fmt.

ca85f1f994 (.x.1): Use $(LN_S) instead of 'ln -s', 
because the DJGPP 2.03 port of 'ln -s' doesn't work.
Include $(EXEEXT) in program names.
Since $(LN_S) may degenerate to `cp -p', be careful
to invoke it from the destination directory.
