Don't fail when run with VERBOSE=yes.
...
Do `set +x' before starting the subshell
from which we invoke chgrp. Otherwise, the output from the
VERBOSE=yes-induced `set -x' would result in spurious differences.

Don't use diff's -u option. It's not portable.

Besides, with GNU diff one can use the DIFF_OPTIONS envvar.
