coreutils/GNUmakefile
Jim Meyering 16c005fe6a We *do* need two different version files.
One for tarball-only, the other to be updated any time we
get a new value of $(VERSION).
* Makefile.am (dist-hook): Create .tarball-version in dist tarball.
* GNUmakefile (_curr-ver): Make git-version-gen use it.
* .gitignore: Ignore it.

Makefile

# Having a separate GNUmakefile lets me `include' the dynamically
# generated rules created via Makefile.maint as well as Makefile.maint itself.
# This makefile is used only if you run GNU Make.
# It is necessary if you want to build targets usually of interest
# only to the maintainer.
